By Fr Ben Loge C.P. Dominic Barberi (1792-1849) entered the Passionist Order despite many obstacles. His early career was as a lecturer and retreat giver, but throughout his Religious life he felt his vocation was to work in England. Trusting in God he finally arrived in his adopted country and began to work for Christian Unity, and fulfil the prayer of Christ: “That they may all be one.” The climax for him was receiving Newman into the Church. He gave of himself as he worked all over England and even went to Ireland to give the first Passionist mission there. He died in “The Railway Tavern” in Reading. The Saints of the Isles series brings together telling accounts of the extraordinary lives of men and women from the British Isles – lives of holiness courage and true discipleship to Christ and the Gospel message.
