The icon is a fundamental element in the entire body of the Orthodox tradition. This is the first of two volumes in which Ouspensky studies the icon's development, through catacomb art, the controversy of the 8th and 9th centuries, the flowering of Russian iconography, to its present state. This book should provide a comprehensive introduction to the history and theology of the icon.
